This concentration at the national home-base was the outcome of bilateral traffic rights designated to the national carrier. In contrast to the US airlines, airlines in Europe already operated spatially concentrated networks long before deregulation. The deregulation of the US domestic airline industry resulted in the reconfiguration of airline networks into hub-and-spoke systems.
